Jack Cope triumphs at St. Andrews Links Trophy

English Amateur Champion Jack Cope secured another prestigious victory by capturing the St. Andrews Links Trophy following an intense playoff battle on the iconic Old Course.

Cope shot a flawless final-round 67, featuring critical birdies on the fourth, fifth, sixth, 10th, and crucially, the 18th hole, to finish regulation play tied at 8-under par alongside Scotland’s George Burns and fellow Englishman Robin “Tiger” Williams. The trio narrowly edged out a chasing pack of six golfers, who finished just one stroke behind.

The playoff began with drama as Burns, a former Scottish Amateur champion, birdied the final regulation hole to join the playoff but was the first to bow out. Cope and Williams continued their duel, battling through three playoff holes before Cope claimed victory at the fourth extra hole—remarkably, his fifth consecutive birdie at the challenging 18th.

Reflecting on his triumph, Cope revealed a determination fueled by previous playoff experiences. “I’ve been in four playoffs before and lost every one,” he said. “I thought my luck had to turn eventually. Having won a big event previously (the English Amateur), I felt confident and wasn’t overwhelmed by the occasion.”

On his playoff performance, Cope added, “Those playoff holes were possibly my best golf of the week from tee to green. My strategy was simple—I committed fully to going for the 18th each time, and those last two drives were among the best shots I’ve hit all week.”

He expressed special appreciation for the significance of winning at such an iconic venue. “I particularly love the Old Course,” Cope said. “Walking here, you can’t help but think about the legends who have played and won here. Playing four playoff holes on the first and 18th holes made the win even more special.”
